A shortlist of entries for the 2012 Global Water Awards has been selected. The shortlisted entries for the major desalination categories are summarized below and a full list of shortlisted entries for all categories, along with a further description of the companies/projects, will be posted at www.globalwaterawards.com later this week.
Desalination Plant of the Year – For the desalination plant commissioned during 2011 that represents the most impressive technical, financial or ecologically sustainable achievement in the industry.
Ad Dur IWPP, Bahrain – Bahrain’s flagship independent water and power project includes a SWRO production capacity of 218,200 m3/d (57.6 MGD) and 1,234MW of power production. A consortium of International Power (formerly GdF Suez Energy), Gulf Investment Corporation, Capital Management House, Instrata Capital and GOSI constructed the project. Degrémont was the EPC contractor for the desal plant and Hyundai Heavy Industries was the power plant EPC. Toray supplied the RO membranes.
Fujairah 2, UAE – A hybrid desalination complex that combines a 454,200 m3/d MED plant, a 136,000 m3/d (36 MGD) SWRO plant and a 2,000MW power generating station. International Power and Marubeni developed the project in consortium with the client, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA). The EPC contract was awarded to an Alstom-led consortium, with Sidem (Veolia) supplying the MED plant and OTV (Veolia) providing the SWRO. Toray supplied the RO membranes and Flowserve Calder provided the energy recovery devices.
Souk Tleta, Algeria – A 200,000 m3/d (53 MGD) SWRO plant built in Souk Tleta in the wilaya of Tlemcen in Algeria. A joint venture of Hyflux, Malakoff Berhad and the Algerian Energy Company developed the project for Algérienne Des Eaux, with Hyflux subsidiaries taking on the EPC work. Hydranautics supplied the RO membranes, while Hyflux supplied its own UF membranes. ERI supplied the energy recovery devices and ILF Consulting Engineers provided technical advisory services.
Southern Seawater Desalination Plant, Australia – This is the second large SWRO desal plant built to serve Perth. It will have a total capacity of 280,000 m3/d (74 MGD), and the first 140,000 m3/d (37 MGD) phase was commissioned in August 2011. The plant was built for Water Corporation by the Southern Seawater Alliance, a consortium of Técnicas Reunidas, Valoriza Agua, AJ Lucas, WorleyParsons and Water Corporation. Dow provided the RO membranes, with UF membranes supplied by Siemens Memcor. The energy recovery devices were furnished by ERI.
Desalination Company of the Year – For the desalination plant supplier that made the greatest overall contribution to the desalination industry in 2011.
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction – A division of South Korean conglomerate Doosan Corporation. During 2011, the company dramatically increased its MED backlog, winning projects to supply the world’s largest MED unit for the Yanbu power plant and for two units for Marafiq. It also commissioned one of the largest MSF plants at Shuweihat in the UAE. Meanwhile, its membrane arm, Doosan Hydro, continued its foray into the North American RO market with the commissioning of a BWRO plant for Bayonne Energy Centre in New Jersey.
GE Water & Process Technologies – The water technology subsidiary of General Electric, housed within the GE Power & Water division. Last year, the company established itself as the dominant supplier in two of the fastest growing market niches: industrial wastewater evaporation for the oil and gas market and containerized desal plants for rapid deployment.
Osmoflo – An Australian membrane OEM providing desal solutions to industrial clients, in which Marubeni holds 40 percent ownership. Over the past year, the company has extended its reach in both the SWRO and produced water treatment markets in Australia, and has expanded into new international markets. It won a six-year contract to operate an RO plant serving a Chilean copper mine and secured SWRO contracts for an LNG complex in Western Australia.
Valoriza Agua – The water services division of Spanish construction and property development group Sacyr Vallehermoso. Valoriza cemented its place among the rapidly rising desal stars in 2011. It commissioned the first phase of the landmark Southern Seawater Desalination Plant (SSDP) in Australia and the company successfully negotiated its way to financial close on the 320,000 m3/d (84.5 MGD) SWRO plant at Ashdod, Israel.
Water Company of the Year – For the water company that has made the most significant contribution to the development of the international water sector during 2011.
Abengoa – The publicly traded Spanish construction group, and parent company of Abengoa Water and Abeima.
CH2M Hill – An employee-owned consultant engineering firm whose OMI division has a portfolio of operating contracts in the US water sector.
Degrémont – The specialist water treatment plant arm of Paris-listed Suez Environnement.
GS Engineering and Construction – One of Korea’s largest EPC companies who recently acquired Inima, an owner/operator of wastewater treatment and desal plants.
Shortlisted desal-related entries in other categories are:
Sorek SWRO, Israel – On the strength of its unique financing package, this 150 million m3/y (108.5 MGD) SWRO project, a joint venture between IDE Technologies and Hutchison Water, has been shortlisted for Water Deal of the Year.
National Water Company, Saudi Arabia – This government-owned joint stock company provides water and wastewater services in Saudi Arabia and has been shortlisted in the category of Public Water Agency of the Year.
SA Water Australia – This government-owned utility in the state of South Australia has been shortlisted for Public Water Agency of the Year.
SAFI RO plant, UAE – This public-private partnership between the Government of Ajman, UAE and Besix polishes the effluent from the Ajman sewage treatment plant for commercial and industrial reuse and has been shortlisted for Water Reuse Project of the Year.
Cartagena Refinery Demineralization Plant, Spain – This zero liquid discharge plant employs BWRO and ion exchange and was undertaken by Sadyt (Sacyr Vallehermoso). It has been shortlisted for Industrial Water Project of the Year.
Gippsland Water Factory – This water reuse plant was constructed as an alliance between the local utility, Gippsland Water and three private companies: Transfield Services, CH2M Hill and Parsons Brinckerhoff. It has been shortlisted for Industrial Water Project of the Year.
Pearl GTL, Qatar – The world’s largest gas-to-liquids (GTL) complex has a zero liquid discharge wastewater treatment plant that was designed and built by a consortium of Veolia Water/Saipem JV and the local construction firm, Al Jaber. It has been shortlisted for Industrial Water Project of the Year.
