Hany started his career at Envirogenics in R&D, chiefly on membranes. He eventually became VP of engineering and worked on thermal and RO plants. In 1989, he co-founded American Engineering Services as VP of Engineering, leading the company to become a major RO supplier in the USA, Middle East and Caribbean, all of which he was responsible for.

In 1994, Hany founded AEWT, now Biwater AEWT, which has been ranked among the top ten RO suppliers globally, and designs and builds plant worldwide. Hany believes he has built more RO capacity than any other single engineer, at over 1,892,000m³/d.

• Jeddah Phase 4 (Saudi Arabia, 189,000m³/d, MSF)

Alongside building his long portfolio of water membrane plants, Hany helped develop the first gas separation membranes.
