Bernie had been in water, as it were, for five years already when he started working on membrane desal in 1978. That was with Ionics, who sent him all over the world for a decade before welcoming him back, aptly enough, to Watertown, Massachusetts.

R&D, ED and RO design and business management all claimed his attention during his Ionics time, which also included Art Goldstein's sale of the company to GE. By 2007, Bernie had designed the Point Lisas, Trinidad, plant, and risen to Principal Process Engineer of GE Water & Process Technology.

In that year, he moved on to a post he describes as 'mentoring the membrane activities of the various business units that make up Veolia Water Solutions, North America'.

While the geographical range of his travels may now be more limited than during his time with Ionics, this correspondent can testify that working away from the office once again occupies a good deal of Bernie's time.
