In just 45 years, the desalination industry has grown from virtually zero, to over 60,000,000 m3 of treated water per day.
Worldwide, almost 16,000 desalination facilities have been built.

So, how many of these are old, and how many are new? In 2010-2011, over 700 new plants with a combined capacity of 5.2 million m3/d were contracted. Worldwide, 3,800 plants are now thought to be offline or decommissioned, making up 6.4 million m3/d of old capacity.
